Snow Groomer Operator

Summary

The Snow Groomer Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient grooming of ski trails and all snow-covered surfaces at Centre Vorlage. The operator ensures high-quality snow conditions by operating grooming equipment, distributing snow, maintaining trail safety, and collaborating closely with snowmaking and mountain operations teams. The role requires autonomy, strong situational awareness, and the ability to work in challenging nighttime winter conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Safe Operation of the Groomer:
  • Start, operate and park the groomer according to established procedures.
  • Use the winch (if applicable) safely and in accordance with training and regulations.
  • Maintain safe driving speeds, especially in low visibility or steep terrain.
  • Communicate consistently via radio with supervisors and other operators.
  • Follow all emergency protocols (mechanical failure, breakdowns, evacuations).
• Trail Grooming & Surface Preparation:
  • Carry out full grooming of trails based on nightly priorities: flattening moguls, conditioning snow for uniform texture, repairing icy or high-traffic areas, and spreading newly manufactured snow.
  • Adjust blade, tiller and finishing tools to achieve desired trail quality.
  • Optimize snow usage to create durable, high-quality surfaces for the next day.
• Managing Manufactured Snow:
  • Distribute snowmaking piles efficiently across the trail surface.
  • Avoid creating hard blocks or thin sections.
  • Level and shape newly covered terrain to prepare trails for opening.
  • Communicate with the snowmaking team about areas requiring more or less snow.
• Monitoring the Mountain & Identifying Hazards:
  • Watch for and report hazards: exposed rocks or thin cover, fallen branches, ice patches, misplaced equipment or obstacles.
  • Notify supervisors of hazards or areas needing attention.
  • Ensure trails are left safe for next-day operations and patrol inspection.
• Light Maintenance & Daily Checks:
  • Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections: fuel, oil and hydraulic systems, track tension, lights, radio and electronics.
  • Remove excess snow and ice from the machine and keep the cab clean and safe.
  • Report mechanical issues or abnormalities to the Technical Supervisor.
• Following Grooming Plans:
  • Execute nightly priorities set by the Mountain Experience Director and the Technical Supervisor.
  • Adapt grooming strategy to changing weather, snow conditions or forecasted traffic.
  • Coordinate with other groomers to ensure efficient coverage of all designated terrain.
• Working Independently at Night:
  • Operate safely and efficiently while working alone in remote, low-visibility conditions.
  • Use strong judgment to assess risks, terrain and changing snow conditions.
  • Maintain a steady work pace while prioritizing safety at all times.
• Collaboration With Other Mountain Teams:
  • Coordinate with the snowmaking team, ski patrol, lift operations and terrain park crew (if applicable).
  • Report conditions that may impact guest safety or next-day operations.

Work Conditions

• Full-time seasonal position for the winter season.
• Mainly evening and night shifts, scheduled according to snow conditions and operational needs.
• Work from a heated groomer cab.
• Training provided on the equipment and grooming procedures.
• Reports to the Mountain Experience Director.
